Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race

by G. J. Lester 8 Aug 2006 15:37 BST 6th August 2006

The annual offshore dinghy race sponsored by Robinson’s Breweries from Beaumaris to Traeth Bychan attracted 63 entries for the 14 mile race. There were 47 monos and 16 cats.

Six boats sailed the course but neglected to sign on (a lesson to all in attending the pre-race briefing and reading the sailing instructions).

The race was sailed under sunny skies and a brisk SW3/4. This gave the fleets a run down the Menai Straits to Puffin Sound and a close fetch to Bennlech. There was then a fast broad reach to Moelfre where the monos turned to beat for home while the cats continued to a mark off Lynas.

RS 400s from Port Dinorwic claimed the first three places in the mono fleet led by C. Gowers and Dart 18s led by, C. Aspinall from Penmaenmawr, dominated the cats. A. Norris and F Mainwaring FROM RWBSC(420) were 4th in the mono fleet.

This annual event is a great race and makes a welcome change from flogging round the cans. The sailing waters are fabulous and the scenery is amongst the best in the country. RWBSC welcomes all visitors and looks forward to many entries for next years race.
