Cadet Nationals at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy Day 5

by Tony Jaffa 25 Aug 2006 11:17 BST 19-25 August 2006

Day 5 of the Cadet Nationals saw dramatic developments at the head of the main fleet, on a day in which the fresh Westerly breeze kept all competitors on their toes.

Gold and Silver - Race 8

Race 8 started in a 12 knot Westerly, which increased to 18 knots and veered as the race progressed.

Josh Pistol and Elizabeth Halling in Pintail started at the pin end, and it seemed that their port tack flyer had paid dividends as they arrived at the windward mark at the top of the fleet. But when the jury boat pulled them from the race for being OCS, Chris Proffitt and Hannah Muskett in No Fear were clear leaders, closely followed by Katrina and Christopher Brewer in Executrix, Miles Blaver-Mann and Ole Alcock in Pulling Power, Ed Impey and Jack Wilson in Touch Wood, and Miles Blaver-Mann and Ole Alcock in Pulling Power.

By the wing mark, Executrix had overtaken No Fear, and as in earlier races, once in the lead, the Brewers were never challenged, and recorded their fifth win of the Regatta.

Meanwhile, the competition was intense for the following top places. With the breeze increasing and swinging to the right, three boats made big gains – William and Sophie Shepherd in the Red Cadet, Hamish Stone and Aaron Woolf in Gnat, and Joanna Freeman and Holly Francis in True Blue. All three recovered from the teens at the first mark to climb through the fleet, and by the final leeward mark, all were in touch with the leading group.

And all three continued their relentless gains, so that by the finish, William and Sophie snatched second place, just ahead of Hamish and Aaron, with Joanna and Holly claiming fourth. Miles Blaver-Mann and Ole Alcock in Pulling Power held on to fifth place, with Amy Seabright and Katie Barr sailing a storming final beat to take sixth.

Gold and Silver - Race 9

The win by Executrix in the morning race saw the Brewers extend their series lead over Hamish and Aaron, so a good result in the penultimate race of the week could have sealed the championship for them.

After a general recall and re-start under a black flag, the regatta seemed to be going the way of the Brewers as they approached the first mark in second place, with Hamish and Aaron outside the top ten. But in a dramatic twist, the jury boat informed Katrina and Christopher that they had been black flagged, and it was a forlorn Executrix which made her way back to the boat-park.

Back on the race track, Chris Videlo and Maddie Harris in Mostly Harmless held the lead for the first round, closely followed by Matthew Shepherd and Charlie Fitzgerald in Purple Dragon, with Joanna Freeman and Holly Francis in True Blue in third.

These three held their positions on the next round, but on the third beat, True Blue made her move, and by getting the shifts just right, Joanna and Holly overtook Chris and Maddie, a lead they never relinquished.

True Blue took the winner’s gun a full minute ahead of Mostly Harmless. Miles Blaver-Mann and Ole Alcock in Pulling Power took third place after a well sailed final beat, ahead Tye Wichard and Ben Thame in Viper and Chris Proffitt and Hannah Muskett in No Fear.

But in the light of Executrix’s black flag, perhaps the most significant result was Gnat’s sixth place.

So the stage is now set for a head to head in the final race. Executrix and Gnat are separated by only 2 points. It seems certain that the title will go to either Executrix or Gnat, but there are various permutations, and any attempt to predict the outcome is complicated by the introduction of the second discard once the tenth, and final, race is sailed.

So, the tension mounts with the final result of this nail-biting event set to go right down to the wire.

Regatta – Races 8, 9, and 10

The third day of racing for the Regatta fleet saw them complete their final three races – and as in earlier races, some of the competitors found the conditions pretty testing, which resulted in a number of capsizes and retirements.

Sarah Dallimore and James Turl in Jiminy Cricket had another excellent day, winning all three races. With their closest rivals Duncan Yeabsley and Lauren Fry in Road Runner scoring disappointing results in races 8 and 10, Sarah and James took the Regatta fleet title by a clear nine points.

As in the main fleet, the result was in doubt right to the end, but Sarah and James recovered excellently from a slow start, and were deservedly winners of the title.
