Melges 32 World Championship 2020 at Villasimius, Sardinia - Day 3

by Melges Europe 29 Aug 2020 06:47 BST 26-29 August 2020

Light breeze day in Villasimius, but despite this the Melges 32 fleet managed to complete two further races, bringing the total of the series to seven, with a discard of the worst result kicking in after the sixth race.

The ranking has changed again, demonstrating the competitiveness of the Melges 32 fleet, and after Friday's racing Martin Reintjes' Caipirinha (2-5 today) has climbed to the top of the standings, with Donino by Luigi Giannattasio behind him. Donino today saw his scoreline increase due to a twelfth and a ninth place.

Best boat of the day was Wilma of Fritz Homann who, thanks to today's races (1st & 3rd), climbing the ranking up to third place, 7 points behind the leader.

The reigning World Champions aboard La Pericolosa score their first bullet of the series in the last race on Friday, gaining important points to get closer to the podium. Schwoerer's crew occupies fourth place, only one point behind Wilma. Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G-Spot closes the top five.

In the Corinthian division, Homanit continues to set the pace, 14 points ahead of Max Augustin's Heat and Waldemar Salata's Startelekom.

With an extremely compact ranking, the grand finale of the Melges 32 World Championship promises to be exciting. The racing will resume Saturday at 10am and the Race Committee, chaired by Maria Torrijo, will have until 4pm to complete three races.
