Ely Sailing Club held their 11th annual open meeting for Toppers on Saturday 26th August. Race Officer Alex Tory had difficulty setting a course due to lack of wind. When the wind filled in enough courses in the middle of the Lake was set and the twenty-two youngsters and two adults slowly sailed round the lake.
Matt Johnson from Great Moor Sailing Club convincingly won all three races and so received the Trophy form Commodore Clare Christan. Michael Rivers from Leigh-on-Sea YC was second counting two second places. Third overall was James Steckemacher form the Cam club who counted a third and fourth place. Marina Brassington from Aylesbury SC also counted a third and fourth place to be the best placed girl helm with seven points.
The first adult prize went to Chris Johnson from Great Moor who finished sixth counting a second and eighth place. Edward Sharrock from Priory SC took the best placed under twelve year old prize.
Four children who had taken part in the sponsored "Set Sail" programme at Ely SC during the May half term entered their first open meeting. They gained valuable experience of a large fleet under competitive conditions. Even though they took the last four positions, ten year old Jack Cammann was presented with a tankard as the best placed Ely helm.
