2021 sees the Supernova Class turn 25 and what better way to celebrate then to set ourselves the ambitious target of having 120 boats on the start line at our National Championship! Whether you're a seasoned pro or a nationals newbie, with three days of fantastic sailing, an all welcoming social scene and amazing sponsorship support this event is for you!

The Supernova National Championship is the big event of the year and it is being hosted by Plymouth Youth Sailing at the Mount Batten Centre, Plymouth, 2nd to 4th July. This year we have once again received some great support from Hartley Boats to allow a fantastic entry package.

We are buoyed up to make the 2021 event better than ever, after all it is our 25th year anniversary! We all know that the social scene at our events is fantastic whether that is in the dinghy park or at the bar, and it's thanks to you that we all take such pleasure from these events.

Events of this quality and size don't come cheap, however the committee has managed to achieve a fantastic package. Entry will be £120, which represents amazing value for 10 races spread over 3 days, an evening buffet and special 25th anniversary commemorative clothing. If you have sailed with other classes in the past you will know how good a deal this is. But that's not all...

We are fortunate to be supported by Hartley Boats who have agreed to provide some very generous vouchers for entrants - £40 per entrant. Hartley Boats have supported us for many years, and we are only able to provide such quality events at such affordable prices with their help.

The Association is once again supporting the event with a £20 off voucher for the 2021 Inland Championship. This will apply to every nationals helm who turns up to the 2021 Inlands at Burton Sailing Club in September!

This £60 package basically makes your entry half price!

But wait - That's not all!

All new entrants from 17th October 2020 will be entered into a prize draw with a brand-new sail and cover if we reach 120 entries by our 2021 Winter Championships, 20th February 2021. That's a 1 in 39 chance to win a new sail or a cover!

What if you've already entered? There'll be an additional prize draw for all entrants with another brand-new sail and cover. Again, this is only available if we're able to reach the magic 120 figure by Winter Championships.

To summarise:

The entry fee is £120, and includes:

  • 3 x days of high quality sailing
  • 1 x social event
  • 1 x 25th anniversary event clothing
  • 1 x £40 Hartley Boats Voucher
  • 1 x £20 Discount entry to 2021 Inland Championships
  • 1 x sail & cover prize draw for new helms from 17th October*
  • 1 x sail & cover prize draw for all helms*
* Only if 120 entrants are signed up by 20th February 2021.

What have new helms said before?

Paul Scofield, Bronze fleet winner 2019: "I was nervous about entering the 2019 Supernova Nationals, but I followed the encouragement of a fellow Supernova sailor at my club (Hunts SC) and arrived in Paignton on a sunny June day. From start to finish there was a friendly welcome and support from the Supernova family of fellow competitors. The local Paignton sailing club were clearly in control, with a strong reassuring focus on sailor safety. This was most evident when cancelling the first planned day of sailing due to the high waves and strong winds. It was a steep learning curve having never raced my boat in waves, but enjoyable and challenging nonetheless."

For those of you that don't know Mount Batten is a top-quality sailing venue which regularly host national championships and large regattas. Their centre is fortunate to have accommodation on site, more details to follow on this late so please sit tight. There is also catering facilities and a bar on site. Alternatively, there is a significant choice of accommodation in the area and a ferry service connecting the club to the Barbican. Those who sailed in 2017 will know what an amazing venue this.

If you are bringing your family Plymouth has a wealth of things to see and do ranging from the National Marine Aquarium, beaches and of course its famous gin distillery.

In addition to what will no doubt be some amazing sailing, this year there will be at least one social event included to ensure everyone has a good time. The Nationals isn't just about the top few sailors, we want everyone to have a great time and really enjoy the social side of things. We hope this encourages some new faces to attend, regardless of their sailing ability.

The buddy system is well established, but expect some further improvements, so even if you haven't attended before you will be supported by some of the more experienced helms.

Mount Batten is a fantastic place to sail from with safe launching/recovery from slipways, so why don't you come along and give it a go?

Entries close on 31 May 2021 - you CANNOT enter on the day.

If you have any questions (or dietary requirements) then email

We look forward to seeing you there and please spread the word around your club members to see if we can get to the magic 120 mark again to keep us at the top of the UK single handed dinghy scene.

What are you waiting for?

All vouchers packages are only eligible for the entrants who turn up to event registration.

Entrants will receive a maximum of one prize in the sail / cover draws.

Please note that if you enter and are no longer able to attend then the Association will allow you to swap your entry with someone (which you will need to find), but we need to be informed of this. Also from 1st June 2021 it is too late for us to amend entries, so we cannot allow swaps from then.

Some epic waves for the first day of racing The 100 or so competitors were generally grateful that the storm of the previous day had passed overnight.
