What a way to start the season - two days of close racing for 33 boats after a day of youth training for 11 youngsters was the order of play at Shoreham SC on the Easter weekend.
The first sea race of the year is for the Navigator Trophy which this year was won by Bill Whitney and John Shelton in their Wayfarer. It was raced in a light southwesterly with the breeze filling in for the second race. After day one Alex Jackson and Chris Kilsby in their Merlin Rocket led overall from Bill and John, with Joe Warwicker and Hugo Valentine in their 420 in third - on equal points with William Warren and Megan Pascoe (Merlin) and Peter Snowdon and Louise Carr (RS400).
The forecast looked like this could be the only racing and it certainly put off a few from turning up on Monday, but it turned out fine and sailable, and those that braved the conditions were rewarded with two races in a fresh, cold and shifty Northerly in glorious sunshine (between the grey clouds). The snow never materialised and Beach Deli supplied us with hot soup and rolls on our return to shore - necessary and warming.
The youngsters dominated again on day two and the Easter Cup was won by Joe and Hugo in their 420 with an impressive 2, 1, 1 to count, second place went to William and Megan in their Merlin Rocket, with Jibrial Bostan and Josh Davies finishing third in their RS Feva, just off the podium in 4th was Edwin Cross in his 4.7. Commodore of Shoreham SC Sophie Mackley said, "It was such great weekend to start the season. There was a real buzz of excitement in the dinghy park before racing and a lot of smiling afterwards. Being beaten by our fast and competitive youth sailors is going to make the rest of us work even harder - Joe, Hugo, Jibriel, Josh and Edwin really showed us how it was done. We owe a huge vote of thanks to those that ran the racing, volunteered on the safety boats and Adur SC for the loan of their RIB. Seeing so much activity and enthusiasm leaves us really excited for the rest of the season."
