Medway Yacht Club in Rochester, Kent is pleased to be running its annual Keelboat Regatta over the late spring Bank Holiday (28th to 31st May) again in 2021 after reluctantly cancelling in 2020.

We are planning a full sailing program for both one designs and Cruisers. The regatta starts with an all-comers handicap practice race on the Friday evening and then three days of intense racing in the Medway and Thames Estuaries.

The three one design classes, Dragon, Sonata and Squib have up to four Windward Leeward races on the Saturday and Sunday with a single round the cans race covering more of the Medway on Bank Holiday Monday.

The three cruiser classes, Class 1 for IRC rated boats, Class 2 for NHC handicapped boats with spinnakers and Class 3 for NHC handicapped boats without spinnakers, will have either one long race or two shorter races on the Saturday and Sunday. Depending on conditions these will take the fleets out into the Thames Estuary. Like the one designs the Cruisers will have an in river round the cans race on Bank Holiday Monday aimed at getting all fleets back to the club for a socially distanced prize-giving.

Visitors are welcome with free river moorings available for all visitors for the duration of the event. Entry fees are £40 per boat with launching and recovery subsidised to only £50 using our travel hoist. To take advantage of the launching service you must be ready to launch by midday on Friday 28th due to tidal restrictions.

Due to the continued Covid situation a limited social program is planned with restricted numbers in the clubhouse and veranda.

Course allows boats to be closer than normal and with more possible infringements The Race Team using the wind direction of SE and 8 knots speed set a narrow course with a wing mark to form the triangle for the triangle sausage format. This effectively gave two downwind legs, a reach along the leeward end of the course and two beats. Posted on 27 Feb 2024
