The classic spring opener on Long Island Sound for offshore races has been Larchmont Yacht Club's annual Edlu Distance Race.
With one of the best turnouts in years, the sixty-boat fleet was given the shorter of the two courses the Larchmont YC Race Committee could select due to the light winds forecast; everyone sailed course #2 - from the start around Twenty-Six Foot Spot Lighted Bell Buoy mid-sound off Lloyd's Neck and return for about 18.0nm. In general, J/Crews enjoyed the course that included a fair amount of light air reaching and fetching.
In one-design world, the J/88 Class enjoyed spirited sailing across the board. While Iris Vogel's Deviation won by 12 minutes elapsed, it was a full-on slugfest behind her for the balance of the podium. In the end, just minutes separated Kevin Marks' Velocity in second, Larry Cutler & Andrew Weiss' One Too Many in third, the Justin Scagnelli & Tim Price duo on Albondigas in fourth, and Nicolas Delcourt's Oh Jee in fifth place.
Winning both PHRF 1 Class and PHRF Overall was Bill & Jackie Baxter's J/111 Fireball. Fifth in class was Neeko Helbich's J/44 Vamp.
Winning PHRF 2 Class was yet another J/Crew, Cory Eaves' J/109 Freedom, with Kurt Locher's J/42 Atalanta taking the bronze on the podium.
Then, in PHRF 3 Class, Jim Weil & EJ Haskell's J/92 Vixen garnered the bronze medal.
In the other handicap classes, in PHRF Plus-One it was Ron Richman's J/133 Antidote that won her class by a substantial margin. Then, in PHRF Doublehanded, John Burack's J/105 Peregrina took fourth place and Glenn Marck's J/109 Waterdog was fifth.
The ORC division saw Steven Levy's J/121 Eagle earn the bronze on podium, while Bill Ingraham's beautiful J/124 Tenebrae take fourth place.
