Bad teams shout at each other
Good teams shout to each other
Great teams hardly need to speak at all
These were the words of wisdom from veteran Foot Trophy umpire Bill Brockbank. Probably he was giving an account for the volume levels drifting over North West London on a gentle westerly breeze on the 28th and 29th October.
This annual team racing event, hosted by Castaways at the Welsh Harp, is an opportunity to try your three-boat team racing in your own boat against a selection of university, club and national teams.
This year eight teams tried out for the trophy and racing was close at all levels. West Kirby sent two teams that dominated the leagues, though not without suffering losses against Tabby Cats and Simon Spolton's Wessex Exiles team. Even the last placed team, hosts London 2, won a prize (the Gnurns trophy) for their fleet racing skills during a light-wind sail-off on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately the lack of wind put pay to the finals but after three rounds, last year's runners-up West Kirby Hawks were the clear victors.
A compendium of over 100 of Bills' other tips and quips, presented in a handy playing card format, were awarded to London 1 for winning the Silver league.
Winners:
West Kirby Hawks:
Andy Bryson, Matt Findlay Tom Hebbert, Wendy Carter, Georgie Corlett and Suzie Short
