2021 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships at Circolo Vela Arco - Day 2

by Eric Faust 27 Jul 2021 17:39 BST 26-31 July 2021

It was a tough day on the water for the Race Committee at the 2021 ILCA 6 Youth Worlds in northern Lake Garda. With a less than promising forecast, the committee sent the sailors afloat three hours early to try to grab the last of a dying north breeze.

The plan worked well, allowing five of the six fleets to complete their third qualifying series race. Unfortunately, the boys Red Fleet failed to complete a race as the wind began to shut off completely, putting that group one race behind in the series after two days of racing.

With the wind quickly dying, the Race Committee had no choice but to abandon all races in progress and send the sailors back to shore.

Passing thunderstorms soon made the decision obvious to cancel racing for the day.

Both girls fleets were able to complete one race today with a few sailors now looking to separate in front of the pack in the overall standings. Ireland's Eve McMahon posted another solid score to lead the girls division after three races. McMahon is followed closely by Anja Von Allmen of Switzerland and Czech sailor Alessia Palanti.

Because of the unequal number of races in the boys division the overall results cannot be calculated, but a few names appear to be rising to the top of the leader board. American Chapman Petersen won his Green Fleet race today and now sits with only five points after three races and is clearly in a good position in the standings.

Sebastian Kempe of Bermuda and Hidde Schraffordt from the Netherlands are also sailing very consistently with 11.2 and 15 points respectively.

Qualifying series racing continues tomorrow with a more promising forecast. The boys Red Fleet are now scheduled to start first tomorrow with hopes of making up their lost race.

Provisional Girls Results: (top ten, 3 races)

1. IRL Eve Mcmahon 5pts
2. SUI Anja Von Allmen 7pts
