Burnham Week 2021 - Day 3

The wind was still in the North for Day 3. The Multihulls headed off down river, and Grey Goose led the fleet substantially when they headed up river to finish. Triassic, Nigel Stevens won with Origami second and Persuasion third. Overall NRB, Julian Lynton, won from Origami, Nick Wood, with Persuasion Simon Barnes third.
Class One had a short leg to Greenward then up the Roach to the pillar buoy to beat out before heading down river. Exile the X37 owned by Paul Trueman, had the lead on the water, with Mantra, Phillip Harbott and Jeannie racing hard as they were sitting first and second overall before the start. After a close race, with Mantra ahead of Jeannie until just before the finish, Jeannie, John Saunders, won by 18 seconds giving her the weekend trophy. Mantra were second on corrected time and second overall with Exile taking third today and third overall. Exile and Jeannie won the Team Trophy for the Burnham Sailing Club.
Class Five also headed up the Roach to Crow before heading down river. Eclipse led, followed by Helms Deep, Sandhopper and Grace and Danger. At Crow, Sandhopper and Grace and Danger who were flying kites right up to the mark got through Paul Hinkins in Helm's Deep. However, Helm's Deep rounded tightly and got ahead on the rounding. Eclipse, Daryl Mylroie won, with Sandhopper, Ernie Brevington second and Grace and Danger, Stephen Gosling et al third. Grace and Danger win on countback overall from Eclipse with Sandhopper third.
Class Six was led by Richard Moore in Ophelia with Kate the Kite, Keith Musto very close behind, Rupert Brown in his Contessa 32 Zora was also close to the lead pack. Kate the Kite won on corrected time with Ophelia, Richard Moore second and Zora, Rupert Brown third. Overall, Richard Moore's Ophelia won, with Keith Musto in Kate the Kite second and Rupert Brown in Zora third.
The local handicap team trophy was won by the Burnham Sailing Club, with Ophelia, Richard Moore, and Eclipse, Daryl Mylroie.
The Elites again had fantastically close racing, with Paul Fisk leading in Legs 11. Richard Bavin in Serious Moonlight up in the mix with All the Gear Neil Fulcher and The Outlaw. The positions changed on the beat, with Serious Moonlight dropping off the pace a little. In today's race, Legs Eleven won, with Oink Squeal second and The Outlaw third. Overall, Legs Eleven, Paul Fisk won, Oink Squeal, Bill Blank second and The Outlaw, Zandy Hobday third.
The 707 class again had really close racing and the places changed through the race. At the finish, BQ sailed by Billy Quinlan won, with Cezanne managing to work her way back up to second and Rooster sailed by Molly Brown third. Overall, BQ were victorious, two points ahead of James Dallimore, with Cezanne, Tony Hall third.
In the Dragons, Mark and Amanda Wade in Avalanche were leading as they came out of the Roach and rounded Redward first before heading back up the Roach. By the finish Peter Marchant was ahead in Beauty and the Beast to take the win with Avalanche second and Pageboy XI owned by Clive Page and helmed by Paul Taylor third. Overall Beauty and the Beast, Peter Marchant and Katie Cole won, with Mark and Amanda Wade in Avalanche second and Anarchy, Chip Cole third.
The Squibs came down to Greenward with Jono Brown in Squiggle under the distinctive pink spinnaker leading and rounding first, followed by Outlaw, Ian Scott and Iona Martin with Guy Fawkes, Phil Aspinall third and Julia Batchelor in Surprise rounding fourth. When they came back to round Redward after beating out of the Roach, Squiggle was still leading with Spoof second. Today, Jono Brown Squiggle won, with Micky Wright in Spoof second and Dan Wastnage in Hartbeat third. Overall, Spoof won, counting two firsts and two seconds. Squiggle was runner up with with three firsts and a 6th. Commodore of the Royal Corinthian Phil Aspinall in Guy Fawkes was third counting a second, two thirds and a fifth.
In the RCOD class, Sue Law led to the first mark again, rounding Greenward ahead of RC12 Cormorant, Justin Waples. By the end of the race, Cormorant had got ahead, with Corinna, Martin Makey second and Coralie, Sue Law third. Overall Justin Waples won the weekend with Sue Law runner up, and Martin Makey third.
In the RBOD class, Aquamarine, Angela Shepherd won, with Beryl, Simon Hollington second and Phalarope third. Overall, Aquamarine won the weekend counting a 4th, 2nd and 1st. Mandarin were second overall counting two firsts and a 6th. Beryl were third overall, with 3,4,2.
In dinghy handicap Eamonn Browne won the first race today in his Sprint 15 giving him 3 wins so far. Bryan Haynes is one point ahead overall after another second in the first race today. They went out into the final race with all to play for. The last race saw Blanca, Eamonn Browne, take the win to take the trophy for the weekend ahead of Bryan Haynes in his Aero 7. Ethan Hague was third overall in his Laser 4.7.
The Phantoms again enjoyed close racing for both races. The first race today saw Bob Portway in Mandy win, with Chris Roberts in Gromit second and Eric Howe's Well 'Eeled third. Race 6 saw Bob Portway take another bullet, which gave him the series win. Eric Howe was second in the race with Graham Dale Jones in The End third. Overall Mandy won with The End second and Well 'Eeled third.
Prize giving followed racing at the Royal Corinthian. The trophies were presented by Olympic gold medallist Stuart Bithell.
