Notts County Sailing Club moved to Stoke Bardolf in 1961 and celebrated the sixtieth year with a long weekend of sailing over August bank holiday, if you didn't want to sit in traffic here was a great alternative.
On Saturday Notts County SC had our Discover Sailing open day, as it was a bank holiday we were not quite sure how it would go but we needn't have worried. Three hundred visitors or over 100 families came and tried dinghy sailing, windsurfing and paddle boarding. Our Start Sailing courses will be full such was the enthusiasm. We also had a Sailability stand (for disabled sailors) and Open Water Swimming stand both of which attracted a lot of attention.
We had a reception at the gate, then a sign on reception and training stand on the way in, then all around the premises stands and display boats for the public, and of course having a go in our coble or Startos. Lots of smiles and happy faces, and a few memberships, but we expect quite a few more over the coming months, and our courses are now full for 2021.
During the afternoon we officially opened our new pontoon, suitable not only for wheelchair users but the open day, launching larger boats and training the pontoon was part funded by the Peter Harrison Foundation and
RYA Foundation. The Vice Commodore Martin Hart cut the ribbon. The Cake by the Lake stand selling donated cakes and raising £340 for charity.
Sunday the club had a 60th Celebration party with music, bring your own picnic and socialising. Nearly a hundred members came down, and after a short speech from the Commodore, James Logan, the cake was cut by President Russ Towns, with a toast of sparkling wine, (alcoholic and non alcoholic).
The Bank holiday Monday was a more relaxed day, some started with an Open Water swim with our affiliated group Love Open Water to clear the head. At 11am there was the David Stevens Memorial Race (raising £200 for disabled sailing) won by Jamie Mawson in adults and Katherine Gunn in junior fleet.
The afternoon saw a Team Medley Relay race, which consisted of teams of four different boats, each doing a lap and passing the batten (a milk bottle), needless to say the bottle was dropped by a few teams, with spectators on the balcony cheering their team on, the Orange team won.
All in all the club enjoyed a great weekend celebrating the clubs sixtieth year, and look forward to many more years of success. More information on ncsc.org.uk
