2021 Redoro Frantoi Veneti International Moth Worlds at Lake Garda - Overall

by Marco Brandon Rossini 7 Sep 2021 18:25 BST 31 August - 7 September 2021

After two races with a Peler breeze on the final day, Tom Slingsby wins the world title with two races to spare. Jensen and Goodison close out the podium; the first Italian is Francesco Bruni and the first woman Josie Gliddon.

The first warning signal for the Gold fleet at 8am made the athletes get into the water when the sun had not come over the mountains. Races were also scheduled in the afternoon but unfortunately the Ora came in a little late, allowing only one race to be held for the Silver fleet.

In the morning the script remained the same: total domination by Tom Slingsby from Australia who retained the title of World Champion with two races to spare, which he won in Perth in 2019.

Second place went to his training partner, Iain Jensen, also from Australia. Closing the podium is the Englishman that calls Fraglia Vela Malcesine home - Paul Goodison, who recovered brilliantly after the accident that saw him break his mast.

First Italian was 'Checco' Bruni, after a super comeback. The second Italian in seventh position was the Olympic gold medallist in Tokyo Ruggero Tita, and within the top ten was also the Fraglia Vela Malcesine athlete Simone Salvà in ninth position.

The Silver fleet saw the Austrian Philipp Hribar come out on top; second from Denmark Frederik Just Melson and third the Croatian Luka Dogan.

The women's ranking see Josie Gliddon, United Kingdom, on the first step of the podium, and second went toJo Aleh, multiple Olympic medallist from New Zealand; both sailors fought in the Gold fleet. Third woman in the regatta was Franziska Mäge from Germany.

Francesco Bruni said: "I am extremely happy with how this championship went, achieving my goal. It seemed like a dream after the first few days, and I'm happy with how I moved up the rankings. A bit of regret remains for the mistakes of the first few days, and for not having done enough training before the championship. It was a great battle with Ruggero, especially the last few races where we were very close in the points; I thank my sponsors very much for their support."
