Despite all the difficulties of the year, the Czech and Austrian D-One Associations hosted well-attended events on consecutive weekends at the Bohemian beauty of Lake Lipno and then three hours away at the crystal-clear lake of Wolfgangsee, near Salzburg.
We enjoyed some proper lake sailing, especially at Lipno where rain and storm clouds were frequently passing over the lake during the weekend. It was also pretty cold, around 12 degrees and I think only survivor staying in a tent was Nick Crickmore, who was also the only successful traveller from the UK.
We had five very shifty races and I think that was the maximum Martin Sousek could pull out as the weather was very unstable. The local club offered us nice hospitality with soups, dinner, beer and Kofola.
On Monday & Tuesday we moved to Wolfgangsee. From Wednesday it got sunny and Wolfgangsee offered us paradise conditions with no wind in the morning and then thermal breeze coming in the afternoon.
We had eight really nice races with very close fights for both 1st and 3rd place. The regatta was perfectly organized and local sailors with the club organized a lot of food and drinks. It was impossible not to enjoy this regatta and we are looking forward to coming again.
Congratulations to Viktor Teply, winner of both events.
Due to the limited numbers and countries represented ithis year, we did not run a Class planning meeting as usual, and will be consulting on next year's events by email and Facebook.
Our plan so far includes a major event in Sardinia in Spring 2022, at the fantastic venue of Porto Rotondo, and then the Alpine Championship at Gravedona, Lago di Como at the end of June - both of which were popular events postponed from 2021.
We are now busy looking at other events to complete the circuit and hope to be back to normal - great sailing in great places, with good friends. Happy D-One sailing!
