On the Spring Equinox, the day started with a minute's silence in tribute to Chris Wozencroft, who unexpectedly died on Friday. "Wozie" was a long-time member of the Warsash Spring Series Committee, providing Crackerjack as White Group Committee Boat and more recently was our Chairman. Crackerjack and its race support team were regular contributors on many Solent sailing events and will be sadly missed.
The race team were slightly rejigged this week with Peter Bateson unable to attend and Nigel Rennie taking charge on the water. The forecast was for Easterly veering to South Easterly during the start sequence so a number of options were produced that would fan around during the morning. We also had another 1st as MySmartMark asked us to trial their new autonomous racing mark, using it as the pin-end of the start line.
With the course pivoting to around Paul Heys and the wind starting to veer toward 110 degrees, Plan B clicked in with Howden Fastnet providing the windward mark 2 miles away, then swinging around to Ancasta for subsequent legs as it turned SE, Class 3 using Contessa 32 Class to slightly shorten the course.
Combined Class 1 and 2 got away to a brisk start with the leeward legs gybing both sides of the course. Class 3 switched to the pre-laid fixed Green pin mark as the Smartmark had a slight positioning wobble with the wind over tide and all classes were clean away.
The 2 hour race saw winners for Jiraffe in Class 1, Mojo Risin' in Class 2 and J'ronimo in Class 3. The Alacrity 18 Ipqu-Aya bringing up the tail of the fleet to complete just within the Finishing Window.
The entries are still open and coming in for the Series / Championships, come and join the fun for some fantastic Spring Racing.
See you again on Sunday.
