The annual Scottish Two Handed Race 2022 took place over the weekend of 3 and 4 September, probably the wettest weekend of the summer. This unique race takes the fleet around either the island of Arran (80 miles) or Holy Island (40 miles) with each yacht, irrespective of size, being sailed by only two people.
A challenge in itself but combined with winds ranging from 26 knots to zero, wind direction swinging through 360 degrees and back again, torrential rain and poor visibility, it was a real test of endurance and stamina by all who took part. Over half the fleet on the short course retired in the windless Lamlash Bay leaving only 8 boats to stick it out into the late evening.
On the longer round-Arran course the fleet they were also blighted by no wind, putting crews to the ultimate test of trying to keep moving and finding any light airs to do so. Last to finish but overall winner of the Viking Sword trophy were the experienced Jim McIlwraith and Angus Scott on board the classic yacht Saboo.
Best performance by a family crew was Prospero (Graham and Euan Randall), fastest round Arran was won by Jings (Robin Young and Kerr Smith), best performance by an all girl crew was Wavelength (Carolyn Elder and Kirsteen Woods), best performance by highest aggregate age was Breagha (B Bocker and D Baker).
Thanks to sponsors Arran Malt for providing liquid prizes.
