2022 Tri-State: Chicago to St. Joe - CASRA © J-Boats
This past weekend, while offshore sailors in the northeast were enjoying their blast around the track in the Vineyard Race, Chicago and southern Lake Michigan sailors enjoyed their annual round-trip from Chicago to St. Joseph, Michigan. By far the most enthusiastic participation was in the J/105 class with eight boats participating, while J/111s and J/109s sailed in PHRF handicap classes.
J/105 Class
For the J/105s, it was seeming the tale of two completely different races. The top teams in the Chicago to St Joe race didn't fare as well on the return leg across southern Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, the seeming "also-rans" in the first race, which included a few of Chicago's top J/105 teams, somehow got it all together for the return leg to dominate the leaderboard.
As a result, the combined scores for the weekend were very, very close, with just 4 pts separating the top five teams! The big winner was also the most consistent, Gerhard Zinserling's Y-NOT posted a 2-2 for 4 pts. to win by only a point. Taking the silver was Jon Weglarz's THE ASYLUM with a 4-1 tally for 5 pts. The bronze went to the big winner on the first leg, Judith & Ross McLean's ESPRIT D'ECOSSE with a 1-5 scoreline for 6 pts. Rounding out the top five was Branwell Lepp's IT WASN'T ME with a 3-4 for 7 pts to take 4th place, while Clark Pellet's SEALARK posted a 5-3 for 8 pts to take the fifth position.
Chicago- St Joe PHRF Classes
Three J/Crews led a sweep of the PHRF 3 Division in the Chicago- St Joe race. Winning was the J/99 RAMBLER, with Scott Sims' J/109 SLAPSHOT II in second, and Peter Priede's J/109 FULL TILT in third place.
In the PHRF 2 Division, Kevin Saedi & Raman Yousefi's J/111 MOMENTUS took the silver, with Mark Olsen's J/120 JAHAZI in fifth, and Tom Papoutsis' J/133 RENEGADE in sixth place.
St Joe- Chicago PHRF Classes
On the return trip, one can only hazard a guess that many of the J/Teams had a lot of fun in the social festivities over the weekend. Certainly, there is no question their performances suffered on the return trip from St. Joe back to Chicago. Not one of the J/Crews in the PHRF 2 Division could crack the top five. However, in PHRF 3 Division, the J/99 RAMBLER took a third to end up winning the PHRF 3 Division for the weekend-- Bi-State Champions they are!!
