Blessed with good sailing conditions, the Charlevoix Yacht Club's annual Red Fox Regatta went off without any issues for the dozens of boats gathered together for their Labor Day weekend extravaganza. Sailed off the beautiful lakeside resort town of Charlevoix, there were over a half-dozen J/Teams that enjoyed gathering more silver for their trophy rooms. The event hosted one-design classes like the J/22s and also PHRF Offshore handicap classes.
J/22 Class
The half-dozen J/22s enjoyed good racing, despite the fact the local hotshot- Tom Barnes on RECKLESS- walked off with two bullets, and the class win. The battle for the next two steps on the podium came down to who-beat-who in the last race and whether any boats could be squeezed in between. In the end, it was Bob Camp's SKADOOSH that took the silver with a 2-3 for 5 pts, just one point clear of Dan Tosch's SAILING INC/ SAIL CHARLEVOIX team that had a 4-2 tally.
PHRF Classes
In the PHRF 4 Division, one of the hottest J/109s on Lake Michigan walked off with the top spot by their sheer consistency. Posting a 2-2 for 4 pts, Bob Evans' GOAT RODEO won the class by a point. Just behind them, it was a bit of an unusual scenario that prevented the Warrior Sailing Team's J/95 WARRIOR 95 to take the silver medal. They ended up getting scored a "4.1" in race one, but won the second race and lost their bid for the silver. A bit strange, to say the least. Nevertheless, the Warrior sailors enjoyed sailing and getting the bronze medal!
In the PHRF 6 Division, Keith & Karen Attee's J/120 ROCKET SCIENCE posted a 5-1 to take the silver.
Then, in PHRF 7 Division, George Golder's J/111 TERRIER was truly the "mad dog" on the race track, striking fear and terror in everyone to post a blistering hot 2-1 to win their division title. The other J/111, Carl Hanssen's VARIANCE sailed a solid series with 3-4 finishes, but missed the bronze step on the podium by a disappointing 1/2 point!
