Joint project between Scarborough Yacht Club and the Scarborough Sea Cadets

Over the last 24 months, a joint project between Scarborough Yacht Club and the Scarborough Sea Cadets aimed at growing a thriving group of qualified young sailors that may become Scarborough Yacht Club (SYC) junior cadets has proved popular.
Situated at North Yorkshire Water Park (previously Wykeham Lakes) on the Dawney Estate, the Sea Cadets have a first class collection of small vessels ranging from the 1-person single sail RS Tera sailing dinghy to competitive multi-person racing RS 21 keelboats.
For young people wishing to gain confidence on the water a large number of paddleboards are available.
Scarborough Sea Cadets have highly qualified sailing instructors offering professional sailing tuition along with a rewarding and enjoyable experience to all.
SYC wished to grow its junior cadet ranks, and with both organisations having a similar catchment area, it seemed a joint partnership would be perfect.
So for the last two sailing seasons, SYC's Rear Commodore Rudi Barman, and Sea Cadets, Gareth Davies MBE with his AI's (Assistant Instructors) have partnered together to offer Yorkshire's young people adventurous and progressive sailing training courses with RYA certificate opportunities, to attract and encourage young sailors of the future. This has worked well, with over 20 young sailors staying with the programme over the last 24 months.
It was planned that the culmination of the course would be a young sailors race on 10th September, but the event was cancelled because of The Queen's funeral mourning period. The Club did however award the sailors their Certificates and prizes from Gill.
The Yacht Club wish our Young Sailors every success for the future. We would like to thank Gill for their support by offering prizes for our cadets, also a big thanks to Secret Spot Surf Shop for providing discounted Yeti flasks for the Sea Cadet volunteers.
Finally a huge thanks to the Scarborough Sea Cadet team and the North Yorkshire Water Park for all the hard work and support this summer. We look forward to coming back next year!
