West Country Boat Repairs 2000 Open at Castle Cove Sailing Club

by Sam Pascoe 21 May 2023 23:08 BST 20-21 May 2023

Castle Cove ordered and delivered a perfect 6-12 knots of wind and wall to wall sunshine for the whole weekend. Eighteen 2000 turned up to race.

Race one got under way after the windward mark was laid for the second time. It was trying to be kind to our hiking legs and drifting down wind. Matt Sargent and Archie Munro-Price took an early lead until lightweights Sam and Benjamin Pascoe plained down the second run to win race one with Pete Vincent and Kirsten Glenn coming through to second.

Race 2 and the wind was gently dropping. Pete and Kirsten had a close battle with Sam and Benjamin until they gybed into the middle down the second run to let Matt and Archie though to second with Sam and Benjamin just winning race 2.

After sailing the fleet enjoyed tea and the most amazing cake made by Julie Pascoe (who was also time keeper and expert bacon sandwich make in the morning) on the balcony. For the evening meal the local curry house supplied sustenance for the fleet.

Day 2 opened with same wind, even matching compass numbers to day one. Adrian Stell and Rob Stell flew up the first beat to lead at the top mark, followed by Pete and Kirsten. Sam and Benjamin then flew down the run to take the lead. Pete and Kirsten also passed Adrian and Rod down the first run and that's how they stayed to the finish.

Race 4 went much the same way as the other 3 races with Sam and Benjamin leading and Pete and Kirsten chasing hard.

With Sam and Benjamin having the event wrapped up, Benjamin (age 6) decided it was his turn to helm for Race 5. Pete and Kirsten had a narrow lead at mark one, but Benjamin managed to drop inside Pete down the run, maybe due to 50kg less in the back of the boat. Pete and Kristen passed Benjamin and Sam up the second beat with Matt and Archie closing up to the both of them.

One lap later coming into the finish with Benjamin breathing down Pete back, Pete, with a big smile, bore away slightly leaving Benjamin to take the win.
