Parkstone Yacht Club is looking forward to welcoming competitors for the 75th Poole Week from 20 - 25 August 2023. Six days of afternoon racing for 11 classes across two race areas with a mixture of racing formats in the beautiful Poole Harbour.

Entrants receive a daily free drink voucher and supper vouchers for the opening and closing day.

Courtesy of our headline sponsors, Bournemouth Digital, Adam Bowers will be in the dinghy park and on the water to offer pre- and post- race observations, along with hints and tips to move you up the leaderboard.

Hall and Woodhouse and Salcombe Gin are both sponsoring a day's racing.

After racing each day there will be a prize-giving where Rooster has sponsored the daily prize draws and boat of the day prizes.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the event the club has provided the 'Britannia Cup' for the overall boat of the week.

The Britannia Cup was originally the Bournemouth Challenge Cup for Yachts Exceeding 100 Tonnes under the Thames Measurement 1924. Britannia, His Majesty King George V won the trophy outright in 1934. In 1936 the cup was represented by His Majesty King George V for competition and Re-allocated by the Bournemouth Yachting Regatta Committee in 1939.

There are over 140 boats entered for what looks like it will be an extremely competitive week.

The 27 strong Flying Fifteen fleet looks like it will be highly competitive with last year's winner Richard Whitworth and Trefor Jones on their new boat 4114, 2021 winners Pete and Jo Allam on 3793 and local favourites Bob Alexander and Huw Willetts on 3537. Jon Gorringe have swapped his Merlin Rocket and will be racing with Kelly Aaron on 3914.

The 19 strong X One Design fleet has several visitors who have had success in the Solent this year will be competing against last year's winners William McNeill and Andrew Tredrea on 123 and current club series leaders David Law, Jane Law, Jane Arnold, and Simon Flack on 40. From Itchenor we look forward to welcoming John Tremlett and Tim Copsey on 91 who have recently won Cowes Week and Cowes Classic Week and Penelope Fulford and Nigel Buckley who also had an excellent Cowes Week finishing second overall.

The 19 strong ILCA 7 fleet will also be hotly contested with Alan Davis who has been having a successful ILCA Masters season and has previously won Poole Week. Also competing is Chris Whalley who won the ILCA Masters Spring Qualifiers at Parkstone earlier this season.

In the 20 strong ILCA 6 fleet Roberta Hartley is having an excellent season at Parkstone along with Emma Aish-Lyons.

In the Wayfarer fleet Jackie Dobson and David Mitchell are back to defend their Poole Week title.

In the Dolphin fleet Nigel Yeoman and Kate Allam are also back to defend their Poole Week title.

In the RS200 fleet Peter Loretto and Dave and Jan Pointer were second and third last year and they are looking forward to more excellent racing on the Bournemouth Digital racecourse.

The Cornish Shrimpers will be competing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and it is an incredibly competitive fleet. Last years winners Paul Tyler and Chris Lane are back to defend their title.

There are three handicap fleets with last year's winners all back to defend their titles, with Peter Stacey in his Dart 18 in the multihull fleet, Steve and Ally Tyler in their Merlin Rocket in the Fast Handicap fleet, and in the Slow Handicap fleet Duncan Glen in his Byte C11.

Studies in concentration A lot happened on the final day of Poole Week 2024. The wind was in one of its light and fickle moods, the tide was ebbing for the first starts, and the harbour was busy with traffic that had been mercifully light earlier in the week. Posted on 31 Aug

Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week. The Dolphins and Cornish Shrimpers tend to sail round-the-harbour courses anyway - none of this triangle/sausage business for them. Posted on 29 Aug

Blow the wind Southerly (sometimes with a bit of East in it too) Poole Harbour was very much a harbour of two halves on the Tuesday of Poole Week. In the top triangle, sailing area for the Flying Fifteens and ILCAs (Lasers in old money), the wind started in the south and pretty well stayed there. Posted on 28 Aug

It's not all about the sailing In the context of one of the south coast's biggest regattas, it might seem strange to say that it's not all about the sailing. But in the case of Poole Week, it never has been. Posted on 25 Aug 2023
