Craftinsure Supernova Traveller Series at Ogston Sailing Club

by Craig Harrison 24 Sep 2023 08:15 BST 16 September 2023

Following the success of the first Supernova Craftinsure Traveller held at Ogston Sailing Club in 2022, the 16th September saw some eager sailors ready to do it all over again.

The event had been eagerly awaited by the home fleet, which is currently surging in size. Race day arrived with a healthy turnout of 30 boats, which included three ladies, one of which was a junior.

With a strong wind coming in from the North East, the Race Officer, Simon Law, was able to set a good sized course using the southern leg of the reservoir. All got away cleanly in the 1st race and as the visitors became accustomed the shifty Ogston wind everyone was able to make steady progress. It looked like Alex Reeve was going to take the first bullet of the day, but a slight mishap towards the end saw local sailor Martin Honnor pass him, not bad going as he'd only been in a Supernova once before. Steve Hawley of Bartley came over the line in 2nd place, with Bolton's Andy Flitcroft completing the top 3.

All headed in for lunch, ready for the food laid on by the club, and a chance to reset.

Another clean start saw the fleet get away for race 2. Last year had seen Steve Hawley dominate the event, and it started to look like the lunch break had got him back in the winning mode. He took the 2nd race followed home by Alex, with Martin taking third place. The wind held for the third race, which gave a repeat of the result from race 2.

Steve deservedly took the overall win, and as it stands is the only person to ever have won the Ogston Supernova Open, will he make it three in a row next year? Martin took 2nd place, and his fellow members will work on persuading him out of his Solo and into a Supernova over the coming months. The final podium place went to Alex, who was unlucky in the first race, but sailed well all day.

Now a firm fixture in Ogston's race calendar we can't wait to welcome the fleet back again next year.

The Association thanks the team at Ogston for hosting the event and everyone for supporting it.
