West Country Boat Repairs 2000 Millennium Series - Review for 2023

by West Country Boat Repairs 8 Nov 2023 17:29 GMT
Pete Vincent and Sophie Bentley win the West Country Boat Repairs 2000 Millennium Series overall © 2000 Class association

West Country Boat Repairs are proud to sponsor the 2000 Class Association Millennium series, we fully support their commitment to competitive racing and love the family-friendly ethos that runs through the fleet.

These inclusive, yet competitive values tempted WCBR owner, Pete Vincent to join the class himself, and in his first full year of dedicated 2000 sailing we are now equally proud that he and super-crew Sophie Bentley have won the 2023 Millennium series!

The final event on the seven-venue tour was the Inlands at Bough Beech in October, which saw 30 boats fight for the title in tricky and changing winds.

The overall Millennium series decider went down to the very last race of the Inlands. This final race of the final event gave Rob & Gemma Burridge an Inlands third, which was not enough to overhaul Pete & Sophie - their fourth overall at Bough Beech meant they won the series by just one point, scoring a total of 10 points vs the Burridges' 11.

A look at these results gives an idea of the immense depth in the class. There were seven events and seven different event winners, which did not include the winners of the overall series! Pete & Sophie didn't win an event but counted three second places.

Across the series, 84 different boats from over 30 clubs took part, demonstrating the popularity of this class across the country and supporting the class association's own description of the 2000 as 'an entry-level performance asymmetric sailing dinghy, equally suitable for cruisers, families as well as serious racers'.

To highlight the class's commitment to family sailing, Millennium prizes were awarded to the top two families - first family were Ed & Ruben Dodwell who scored two really notable results, second at Chichester and third at Carsington, and second family were Dirk & Leif Meyer. Our congratulations to both.

New for this year, the silver division was won by newly engaged Jay Whitehead & Alice Moore, what a good omen!

Pete Vincent said, "West Country Boat Repairs are delighted to be sponsoring such an active and friendly class. Sophie and I are very much enjoying our 2000 sailing and of course delighted to have won the series!"

"We are very pleased to announce that we will continue to develop our relationship with the 2000s by sponsoring the Millennium Series in 2024."

The 2024 Nationals at the Royal Torbay Aug 4-9 will be the 25th Anniversary of the class and will be a special event".

In the meantime, we hope Ugly enjoys drinking from his very own Ugly Mug!
