It's Hobart time for this Racer Cruiser

The recently launched JPK 11.80 Atomic Blonde is the second JPK 11.80 built right here in Australia. Commissioned by Dr Simon Torvaldsen from WA who is no convert to the brand having previously owning a JPK 10.80 of the same name. Simon and his team are jumping straight into the deep end lining up on boxing day for the Rolex Sydney to Hobart race.

It was the JPK French Founder and Master Mariner Jean Pierre Kelbert who had an ambition to compete in the Hobart in 2015 and his entry the JPK 10.80 Courier Leon surpassed this ambition with a 2^nd Overall for the Tattersalls Cup.

Together with JPK Pacific, Innovation Composites & Race Yachts the ambition is to boost the Australian Made boat-building sector by manufacturing a globally successful yacht in Australia. The amazing results achieved in Europe & the UK by the JPK 11.80s are a testament to the design. The Hobart Race has not featured an Australian Made racer for some time and hopefully the JPKs will be in with a shot.

The JPK 11.80s are a composite IRC handicap racer cruiser with a comprehensive record of success including the Fastnet and Middle Sea race. JPK Pacific have now delivered the first two 11.80s during 2023 from their Made in Australia Nowra based builder Innovation Composites.

Atomic Blonde features moderate chines with generous hull form stability. Performance is enhanced by a carbon fibre mast & boom package from Axxon. Sailing master Larry Jamieson said With tiller steering it's very well balanced and surprisingly easy to sail - she really gets up and goes so I'm really looking forward to enjoying some exciting competitive sailing.

As a Performance Racer / Cruiser the crew comforts such as an oven and fridge will boost morale during the challenging Hobart race that's fire sure.

Dr Simon said, JPK Pacific & Innovation Composites have built a great boat and with my knowledge of the JPKs they sail well in all conditions, but like everyone we rely on crew performance and the Weather Gods for a fair share of our optimum conditions".

JPKs are certainly gaining momentum in the Australian market, other JPK entries in the 2023 Hobart also include, Christopher Opieloks JPK 10.80 Rockall 8 and in the 2H division Jiang Lins JPK 10.30 Min River.

Minerva is a Reichel Pugh 43 built by DK Yachts Malaysia, and modified by Mark Mills to add a bulb keel optimised for IRC in 2005. She was originally named Pla Loma IV, raced in Asia and imported to Australia in 2003. The current owner purchased the yacht in 2010. A further 300kg weight was added to the bulb in 2014 under the supervision of Andy Dovell. This boat is competitive on IRC, and the current handicap is 1.152. Sleeps 8 while racing (4 each side) and 2 in the bow when not racing, and boasts comforts of a separate galley (twin gas burners, sink and cold box), nav station, and enclosed head. Interior is well maintained and functional for racing or cruising, with more than 1.90m headroom. . Floor boards are wood veneer over foam. Anti fouled and extensive maintenance by Noakes July 2023.
