Following up their win at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Hardy Cup early this year, Josh Hyde and his “Waitemata Racing” team of Jack Manning, Zach Fong, Cody Coughlan and Luis Schneider, can now also claim the prestigious title of back-to-back winners of the RNZYS Youth International Match Racing Cup.

Hyde and team join a list of five other sailors in the cup's 34-year history to win back-to-back events, joining Josh Junior, Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, Phil Robertson & Graeme Sutherland, RNZYS, Jimmy Spithill, Royal Price Alfred Yacht Club & Richard Sydenham, Royal Yachting Association.

Hyde commented at the opening that coming in as the defending champion and fresh off a big win, the team was just going to focus on “keeping it simple & working together”.

After a close racing the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club’s, Daniel Kemp and his crew of Louis Tilly, Lachlan Wallace, Charlie Verity, Isabella Holdworth. Finished a close second. Isabell said after prizegiving, “We have enjoyed our time in Auckland, it was great to be in the new boats - thanks to the other teams, we enjoyed the tight, fun racing. Auckland really turned it on this week, the weather was impeccable, great hospitality from our host family & the RNZYS.”

Chief Umpire for the regatta, International Umpire Ryan Parkin, said “it was great to have assembled such a high caliber umpiring team here for this event, the new Emirates Team New Zealand Elliott 7’s enabled such a seamless event.”

After prizegiving we spoke to Hyde about his result: “we had a big re-group last night and we’re so happy with the outcome of this regatta. We pushed a lot more for this event.

Asking Josh about the teams goals: “we will be applying for entry to as many regattas as we can, with a plan to set ourselves up for a good year. Hopefully we crack into the open and world tour events next year.”
