Celebrating 125 Years of Sailing

The Blackwater Sailing Club in Heybridge, Essex is delighted to be hosting its annual Open Day on Saturday 27th April with an open invitation to individuals, couples and all family members whether they are sailors or complete beginners. The Open Day will start at 11.30am and finish at 5.00pm.

There will be many opportunities for everyone to enjoy the Club's facilities: sailing sessions with experienced sailors on the large lake in different dinghies including Quests, Zests and Wayfarers. Cadets will also be giving demonstrations of Optimist sailing.

Near the Clubhouse other rigged boats will be available for viewing.

As the tide comes in during the afternoon visitors will be able to go out on the river Blackwater in ribs, launches and cruisers.

At 2.00pm visitors will also be able to watch club members race on the river.

There is no need to book, just come along on the day and bring a change of clothing and shoes just in case. Life jackets will be provided. Refreshments will be available and the Bar open.

Members will be given guided tours of the recently refurbished Clubhouse and grounds and will be pleased to chat through all the sailing opportunities at the club as well as the many social activities on offer too.

The Commodore, Alan Hoy, said: "We're all proud that our award-winning Club is celebrating 125 years of sailing this year. It's a most friendly vibrant club of over 1000 members which is still run by volunteer members - we're looking forward to welcoming visitors to have a taster of what's on offer at our Open Day."

The Club's extensive race programme for both dinghies and cruisers is competitive, fun and in a friendly atmosphere allowing for all sailing abilities. It is a RYA registered Sailing School and has a full range of training courses available. The Cadets, ages 8-18 are active and enjoy their own popular training weekends and a cadet week in the summer holidays.

It's not just about racing though as cruising and leisure sailing is very much part of the Club's appeal.
