Lymington Respect Gin XOD Week 2024 Day 4

by Rory Paton 12 Jun 05:13 BST 8-12 June 2024

Another day with a lot more northerly shifty winds

Race 7 was started after a general recall under flag U, unfortunately a couple more boats got caught out by this. With the tide on full ebb things got messy at the first mark and spreader Phil and Jo Brewer's Zest lead the way.

On the run to 2 at Yarmouth there appeared to be more pressure out to the east and the boats on this side gained handsomely. On the beat to mark D it paid to tack straight away, Mayfly got this one right to win safely from Nik, Lindsay and Roy Froud in Venus, Myrtle, Lone Star and Gleam.

Race 8 and around the time of the start a huge left shift kicked making it possible to lay the mark from the right hand side of the start line. Lone Star made the perfect port tack start to lead ahead of X Ray. On the run to the elusive and hard to find mark Unicorn once again the boats on the left hand side of the run made big gains. The leeward mark was very congested. On the final beat to the river finish Zest showed magical pace to win from X Ray and Lone Star. Meanwhile Claire de Lune made a miraculous recovery to 4th ahead of Beatrix.

The fleet retired to some lovely canapés made by members of the fleet. Some fabulous cake to celebrate Rory Paton and Ed Wilson's birthdays provided by Carol Dunning and lovely rosé provided by Shan Pascal from our sponsors Copper Lining "PINK". Order a case before 16 June mentioning Lymington X Boat week to have a chance of winning a private tasting for you and friends in the comfort of your home.

Wednesday is the final day with all to play for.

Bumper participation is an indicator for the health of sailing It would be so easy to write about the Olympics and America's Cup this week in my newsletter but, in all honesty, we're writing and talking enough about those on Sail-World.com and YachtsandYachting.com already.
