The first edition of the rally organised by Grand Large Yachting comes to an end in the Azores in 10 days' time.
Setting sail in September 2021, in a world where Covid still limited our movements, the crews of the Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey 500 will cast off from Ponta Delaga one last time on June, 24.
In 2021, under the impetus of the famous sailor Jimmy Cornell, Grand Large Yachting launched its first rally, the Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey 500 (GLYWO 500), a round-the-world voyage in 3 years to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation by Magellan and Elcano. 32 boats took the start in September 2021, including owners of Allures, Outremer, Garcia and RM yachts representing 13 different nationalities.
As they approach the final leg, they are taking stock: more than 35,000 nautical miles covered since Seville in Spain, where they celebrated the official start of this adventure. While the majority had chosen to follow the trade winds through the Panama Canal, Andrea Salernot, with his RM 13.80 Cachalot, was the only participant in this first edition to have chosen to follow the southern route, through the Straits of Magellan. He, along with more than 30 other participants, the Grand Large Yachting team and Jimmy Cornell, will be in the Azores to celebrate this great adventure in a joyous and, above all, emotional way.
Each crew closes the loop with extraordinary memories and highlights: Cartagena in Colombia, Opua in New Zealand, Vanuatu, Rodrigues, Namibia... which they will be able to share with the participants in the next edition. The World Odyssey 25 will set off again in September 2025 with more than thirty participants.
