The Grand Soleil Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda together with Cantiere del Pardo, kicks off today.
The event, which returns to the Costa Smeralda for the first time since 2007, is dedicated to the Grand Soleil owners who have gathered in Porto Cervo for a weekend of friendly sailing on the water and exclusive social events ashore.
The Skippers' Briefing will take place this afternoon, followed by a Welcome Cocktail for owners and crews on the panoramic terrace of the YCCS. The programme for the fleet of almost 40 Grand Soleil yachts is to sail tomorrow and the following day, 22 and 23 June, in the unique setting of the La Maddalena archipelago.
Entries for this 22nd edition of the event include the Grand Soleil 72s Pantarei 2 and Shanti, Cantiere del Pardo's newest flagships. The Grand Soleil 80 Essentia is the most imposing vessel in the fleet at around 26 metres in length. Also in attendance are models that have made the history of Cantiere del Pardo, such as the Grand Soleil 42s Gilda and Tobalù del Mar, both designed by German Frers, and Bucentaure 2, designed by the Judel/Vrolijk studio. Other entries include the Grand Soleil 40s Fra' Paolele, and Yankee R, and the Grand Soleil 44 Lazy Dog, all designed by Matteo Polli and Nauta Design. The majority of the fleet hails from various regions around Italy, but the entry list also features participants from Spain, France, Monaco and as far away as Puerto Rico, in the form of the Grand Soleil 44 Lazy Dog, owned by Sergio Sagramoso. Two representatives of the traditionally large Adriatic fleet will also be taking part: the GS 44 Athirat from Trieste and the GS 43 Seawolf from Rimini.
Tomorrow evening, 22 June, an elegant Gala Dinner dedicated to owners and crews will be held at the Club's restaurant - an occasion for participants to gather and share a special celebration together in the exclusive setting of the YCCS. The event will conclude on Sunday, 23 June, with the Prize-Giving Ceremony in Piazza Azzurra.
The forecast for the coming days indicates brisk Mistral winds of 20 to 25 knots.
