Superyacht Cup Palma has experienced the most unusual of conditions in almost two decades of competitive superyacht sailing — an absence of wind in the middle of the Bay of Palma which saw racing abandoned.
It marks the first time any racing day has been lost since Superyacht Cup Palma moved to its now familiar June timing in 2007 — 17 years ago.
The loss of racing on Friday's eagerly anticipated Jaquet Droz Race Day was the result of a northerly mistral gradient wind preventing Palma Bay's normally ultra-reliable sea breeze from establishing itself. Such circumstance usually only occurs on one or two days throughout the Mallorcan summer.
"It's a real shame to have lost a day of racing, but we have perhaps been very fortunate over many, many years," said SYC Event Director Kate Branagh.
"We have had to shorten a couple of courses since we moved to June dates back in 2007, but this is the first time we had a day without racing results — we will be looking to make up for it on Saturday, with the deciding final day at Superyacht Cup Palma."
The North Sails Happy Hour went ahead as planned on the Real Club Náutico de Palma dock, which was later followed by the invitation only St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Midsummer BBQ for owners.
Racing concludes tomorrow with St. Regis Race Day followed by the Superyacht Cup Palma Prize Giving on the RCNP Terrace.
