Cape 31 Med Circuit Round 6 at Yacht Club Sanremo, Italy

by Cape 31 Class 18 Jul 2024 20:19 BST 14-16 June 2024

Over the weekend, the beautiful coastal town of Sanremo hosted Round Six of the Cape 31 Race Circuit in the Mediterranean.

Over the course of three days, eight teams with owners from seven different nations battled it out across a series of seven races. After losing the first day to no wind, the Cape 31s enjoyed two days of racing, with six out of eight teams winning a race—highlighting just how tight the racing is in this class.

The race committee was led impeccably again by Fulvio Parodi, with Jury President Marco Cimarosti and the Yacht Club Sanremo. The teams also enjoyed some great onshore socials with pasta parties and a lovely dinner at Sanremo Yacht Club.

It was Lennard Van Oeveren's Motions who came out on top. A remarkable achievement for a team also racing in the Corinthian/1 Pro division to take the overall win. Lennard and his team joined the fleet in 2022 and enjoyed racing in the UK before taking the leap into the 2024 MED Circuit. Catalin Trandafir took second place for the third time this season, and Round 5 champions Shotgunn took third on countback to Meerblick.

Lennard said, "We've done a lot of hard work. It wasn't easy—the results and the speed were there. It's been great to be here in Sanremo."

It was Michael Wilson's Shotgunn who sealed the deal in the MED Circuit - which will be awarded at the Europeans later in the year!

The Cape 31 Fleet are now eagerly awaiting the 2024 European Championships, which will be hosted by Yacht Club Sanremo in November. With many teams traveling from far and wide—from the UK to the US—the class is also hosting a training regatta in Sanremo in October for teams to get up to speed and get to know the area. With 20 provisional 'notices of interest,' it's expected to be an amazing event.

Thank you to Umberto Zocca and team at Yacht Club Sanremo. Thank you also to to our International Class Partners Doyle Sails and Quantum Sails, without whose support the Circuit in the MED wouldn't be possible.
