ABP Cadet UK National Championship 2024 in Plymouth - Day 2

The second day of the Cadet Nationals on Monday 29th July unfolded with sparkling sunshine dancing upon Plymouth's turquoise sea. Indeed spirits were high amongst the Cadet fleet after the exhilaration of Sunday's racing and an early morning prize-giving which celebrated the successes of the previous day.

But the older and perhaps wiser of the experienced helms held their optimism in check. The forecast predicted more conditions perhaps more suited to kayaking than kite sailing, and a complete lack of cloud cover was indeed not the best pre-cursor to a day of sustainable wind for racing.

At 10.30am sharp the racing fleet of Cadet boats from ten countries (GBR; Australia; Argentina; Netherlands; Czechia; India; Ukraine; Belgium; Germany; Poland) were launched, and with RO Arky's words of caution ringing in their ears (clean starts please!) they set off out the harbour and past Drake Island with a light north easterly breeze in their sails.

And then, as if a switch had been tripped by the wind gods, the wind abruptly died. The RO remained resolute. Patience was the key, who knew if the wind would return. And so we waited.

And we waited.

Despite a lengthy delay to the start of racing, enthusiasm for a day on the water remained undimmed. With the close knit community community of Cadets floating side by side, a team of safety RIBs lending moral support, and snacks aplenty, the flotilla soon resembled something of a floating picnic as happily boats exchanged good natured banter (and perhaps the odd wet sponge) and temperatures continued to soar.

Relaxed and good natured water fights were the order of day (unofficially at least) and nothing could be done in the face of a complete lack of sustainable wind for a good hour or two.

But the RO held his nerve.

Then finally, almost as if on cue, the sea breeze moved in, bringing with it a change in wind direction and some welcome respite from the heat of the day.

Quickly, and without hesitation, a new course was set, and at 2.15pm Race 4, start 1 got under way for the 101 boats. This was followed by the second and final race of the day at 3.28pm. Two races in total, and some superb sailing by our resilient fleet of Cadet sailors who finally made it back to shore after spending 7 hours on the water. A big thank you to our Coaches; Race Committee; RO Bob Arkwright (Arky); safety crews and parent volunteers.

At the end of day provisional results are that Josh Garner and Jack Bentsen from Australia continued to head the leaderboard, with Illia Donchenko and Anatoli Moskalenko from the Ukraine moving up to second, and Yehir and Yurii Veretelnyk also from the Ukraine in third. The regatta fleet leaders are Kyla Brezan and Alex Nailer, with Hugh Voysey and Hannah Muir Wood in second, and Noah Sauven and George Dearsley in third.

The Cadet Class are extremely grateful to the support of all our sponsors, in particular Associated British Ports, Minerva Virtual Academy, Stubborn Mule, Pure Storage, NFU Mutual, Royal Hospital School, GOAT Marine, West System, Optimum Time, Exe Sails, The Cornwall Bakery, Stitchprint, Golden Duck, Indigo Concept, Clamcleat and Llandow Caravan Park. The event is being run by Plymouth Youth Sailing, at the Mount Batten Centre for Watersports.
