2024 International WASZP Games at Sandefjord, Norway - Day 1

by Marc Ablett 7 Aug 2024 06:17 BST 5-10 August 2024

The highly anticipated 2024 International WASZP Games commenced under perfect conditions, with sunshine and flat water providing an ideal backdrop for the first day of competition.

Each fleet completed three races, mostly all foiling, despite frequent light patches that turned the races into really strategic pressure-based races.

Bellomi Shines in Debut Performance

Mose Bellomi, a young Italian sailor, stole the spotlight at his first major WASZP event and on his first day at the WASZP Games. Demonstrating exceptional skill and strategy, Bellomi leads the overall standings, making an impressive mark in his debut appearance.

Gavin Ball Impresses with Unique Style

Another standout was Gavin Ball, whose smooth manoeuvres and unique Hawaiian style is a vibe in itself. The laid-back Hawaiian who doesn't seem to stress about anything has an innate ability to navigate challenging conditions.

Ettore Botticini's Consistency

Ettore Botticini, known for his reliable performances, topped the Yellow Fleet with consistent results. His steady approach and tactical expertise were on full display, earning him the top position in his fleet. During the daily debrief, both Gavin and Ettore shared insights and strategies, answering questions from the fleet. This is a unique aspect of the WASZP Class, which encourages information sharing throughout the fleet. Everyone is there to help and it is fantastic to see the whole fleet engaged in this ethos.

Historic Debut for the 6.9 Fleet

The 6.9 Fleet marked a historic milestone with their first-ever separate Games fleet. Despite the challenging conditions, three different sailors emerged as heat winners: Francesco Carreiri, Rebecca Geiger, and Tommaso Geiger, all hailing from Italy. This trio holds the top three positions, underscoring the depth of talent within the fleet.

Women's Division Highlights Competitive Spirit

In the Women's Division, Hedvig Doksrod of Norway continued her stellar performance, consistently finishing in the top 10 of her open fleet. Her results highlight the competitive parity between men and women in the WASZP fleet. Doksrod leads Bridget Conrad of Australia, setting the stage for a tight race between the top contenders from Norway and Australia.

Emerging Leaders Across Divisions:

  • Junior (U18): Mose Bellomi (Italy)
  • Youth (U21): Alberto Hernandez (Spain)
  • Apprentice: Gavin Ball (USA)
  • Masters (40+): Emmanuele Savoini (Italy)
  • Super-Masters (50+): Mikal Vazquez (Spain)
