Welcome to Sail-World's coverage of September 4, 2024 of the Louis Vuitton Cup in which all racing has been cancelled

From The America's Cup Media Centre:

"Good morning, today's racing has been cancelled due to weather. The plan is to race tomorrow (September 5), schedule to follow".

The new schedule has been announced and appears below.

The weather system in the Predictwind graphic above is for 2200hrs tonight and shows an advancing storm with winds gusting 35kts and averaging 25kts.

The image below is for lighter breezes, but still significant wind. The progress of the system predicted to pass tonight is unpredictable.

Following the capsize an sinking of 120ft yacht Bayesian off Porticello, Sicily, southern Italy, meteorologists said that the temperature of the Mediterranean was 3°-4° warmer than usual and this was a factor in making the unusual weather behaviour in the Mediterranean.

Four races were scheduled for today. But a decision was made at a meeting scheduled for 0900hrs CEST as to whether racing will take place, given today's weather forecast and yesterday's events.

If you have not already done so, have a read of our latest story using black box data from the boats to look at the key performance indicators for two of the AC75s Alinghi Red Bull Racing and INEOS Britannia as we analyse the cost/distance of Alinghi's foil-fall, and show how big the turbulence effect really is using performance data.

Virtual Eye

Sail-World will be using Virtual Eye from ARL for America's Cup coverage. It is a great tool and one that had its debut in the 1992 America's Cup, and has since been used in most top professional sports, transforming their coverage and viewer experience.

Weather Prognosis:

America's Cup Weather Partner PredictWind has provided a dedicated Race Weather Center offering fans access to detailed daily weather breakdowns, live webcams and historical weather data to daily weather breakdowns written by meteorologists.

Provisional Forecast Race Day 5: To be updated.

Wednesday 4th Sept

The weather will deteriorate and we expect rain with a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorm for the day with possible lightning. Winds of 5 to 10 knots from the North are expected on average, with possible strong gusts under thunderstorms. Temperatures will be few degrees colder with a maximum of 24°C. Further south over the Balearic Islands, very strong winds are expected up to 50 knots. Those should not impact Barcelona at this stage but look for our next update on Wednesday morning with the latest model runs.

Virtual Eye

After the racing you can replay the key points, or the whole race using Virtual Eye from ARL
