The Chase Sailing Club has experienced a phenomenal year in 2024, cementing its reputation as one of the premier sailing clubs in the region.

With significant expansions to its racing calendar, impressive participation, and a thriving community spirit, the club has demonstrated that its commitment to inclusivity, competition, and camaraderie is stronger than ever.

A Year of Racing Innovation and Growth

One of the club's standout achievements this year was the doubling of racing days from two to four. Adding Friday evening races and Sunday rookie sessions alongside traditional Wednesday and Saturday events has paid dividends, attracting sailors of all skill levels and ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to compete.

Wednesday Evening Series: This 22-race series saw 58 entries, with Neil Davis and Michelle Evans securing the top spot in their GP14 after consistent performances.

Friday Evening Series: A new addition for 2024, the Friday series quickly became popular, drawing 36 entries over 14 races. Gareth Hyland, sailing his Blaze, clinched victory with a display of skill and determination.

Saturday Racing Highlights:

  • Icicle Series: This winter series attracted 64 competitors across 38 races, with Josh Hyland in his Phantom emerging as the champion.
  • Spring Series: A close contest among 61 sailors over 30 races ended with Alex Berry triumphing in his Devoti D-Zero.
  • Summer Series: The talented duo Neil Davis and Michelle Evans claimed another win, with 58 participants competing in 26 races.
  • Frostbite Series: A fitting end to the Saturday calendar, this series saw 47 boats race through 18 events, with Sam Coxon taking first place in his Phantom.

Sunday Rookie and Pursuit Racing:

The introduction of a dedicated rookie series followed by a 60-minute pursuit race has been a resounding success. These light-hearted but educational sessions brought in fresh faces and provided a platform for learning. Key victories included Russ Lutwyche in the Spring Series and Ant Morris in the Summer Series, while Richard Instone claimed the Frostbite title in his Solo.

Thriving Competitive and Social Events

The Chase Sailing Club has also hosted an array of prestigious regattas and championships, enhancing its standing in the sailing community. Highlights included:

  • GP14 Midland Bell
  • Laser Midland Grand Prix
  • Lightning 368 National Championships
  • RS300 Open
  • LOMO Blaze Inland Championships
  • Phantom Open
  • Seldén SailJuice Robline Polar Chase
The club's annual sprint championships, Boxing Day race, and various club cups added further excitement to an already packed calendar. These events provided ample opportunities for members to showcase their skills while enjoying the camaraderie that defines The Chase Sailing Club.

A Club Powered by Community

Beyond the racing, 2024 was marked by community-driven initiatives and events that highlight the unique spirit of The Chase Sailing Club. Rules nights, prostate cancer awareness evenings, and fundraisers brought members together for causes both personal and club-focused. Work parties have kept the facilities in pristine condition, and the addition of a new beer garden, set to open in 2025 shows the club's commitment to continuous improvement.

The year wasn't without its challenges, as the club mourned the loss of several beloved members. However, the overwhelming turnout to honour their memories underscored the deep bonds that unite the Clubs community. Commodore Dave Watkins put it best: "This sailing club is more than just a club; it's like a family."
