The highly anticipated winter series at Fishers Green Sailing Club kicked off
when back when on the 1st December, a 24 race series. The winter series
now certainly added to the list of ones to win at the green.
35 boats across the series took part, Merlins, Solos, Lasers, Streakers and
Toppers in healthy numbers, not to forget a growing Aero fleet.
The real story of the series was the unpredictable nature of the breeze either,
to much breeze with Storm Darragh ripping through, or two little, with areas of
high pressure preventing races taking place.
When we did manage to sail the racing was as competitive as ever having nine
different race winners; the quickest and most consistent team were that of
winning team Merlin Rocket 3575 Harry Steward & Claudia Mancini taking the
title by two points from father and daughter team also in Merlin Rocket 3754
Tony & Jess Cooper, both teams mastering the extreme opposites in conditions
brilliantly.
Leading singlehanders was Solo 4471 Nick Pighills in sixth. Youth sailors
Daisy Cox, Ben Smith, Alvy Jones taking on the adults in their Toppers/Cadets, with the
highest ranked youth sailor being Daisy Cox in her Topper.
As the series came to the final Sunday the weather had one last treat in store,
+20mph gusts in shifty conditions, which really tested those who took part. The
fabulous rescue crew, Richard, George, Matt, Alan, were double busy; they
didn't even get time to have their customary sausage sandwiches. RO for the
day Graham Sexton did his best to keep scores as boats hit warp factor 10
while others took swimming lessons.
The shorten course flag raised for the
final time, the fleet returned to shore for a prize-giving and lunch of pie and
chips catered by the legend Jon Steward who went without due to an admin
error.
Great racing all round, and huge thanks to all those who took part, a promising
start to the season and roll on the spring and champagne conditions at the
green.
