Sailing for life: SSCBC welcomes young and old with open arms

The sparkling waters of the Mornington Peninsula have recently welcomed 88 Optimist sailors from all over the country to participate in the 2025 Organic Garden International Optimist Victorian and Open Championship. Sailors participated in three days of intense sailing in the majestic waters off Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club (SSCBC), known for its calm, protected conditions with a prevailing off shore breeze, ideal for all sailors, young and old.
Despite the Club being formally recognised for its efforts in hosting many State, National and International competitions by being awarded the 2024 Australian Sailing Victorian Club of the Year and subsequently a National finalist, it is the Club's recent work in encouraging new sailors to have a go and participate in Learn to Sail programs that are now in focus. Catering for all ages from 5 years to adult, with the ultimate aim being to ignite a life-long passion for sailing, friendships, participation, having a go and coming together to support one another, the Learn to Sail programs have moved to a new level.
This renewed focus to introduce inexperienced sailors to the waters off Sorrento is part of the Club's strategy of Sailing for All: Sailing for Life. One of ways the Club is implementing this renewed focus is through the new SSCBC Sailing Academy, supported by TLC Healthcare.
The collaboration between SSCBC and TLC Healthcare has launched a unique Sailing Academy, providing local families with new opportunities to engage in a sport that builds resilience, teamwork, and a connection to the water.
Officially launched on 16 November 2024, this initiative is more than just a sailing program — it's a life-changing platform designed to open doors for children and youth in the community.
A community-focused vision
SSCBC and TLC Healthcare share a common mission: to promote wellbeing and innovation while making a lasting impact on the community. The new Academy is their answer to these goals, offering programs that provide access to sailing for children who might otherwise miss out on such experiences.
"We're excited to launch this program and work with TLC Healthcare to bring more young people to the water," said the SSCBC Commodore Scott Llewelyn. "Sailing is more than a sport—it teaches life skills like independence, problem-solving, and teamwork. These are lessons that go far beyond the boat."
Opening doors for Mornington Peninsula families
The Academy is built on several pillars aimed at making sailing accessible to all. Scholarships are available for local children, providing them with Club membership, access to a boat for the program's duration, lessons, and ongoing sailing opportunities. These scholarships are designed to eliminate financial barriers, ensuring that the sport is accessible to everyone in the community.
In addition to scholarships, local schools are being invited to participate in free sailing programs, giving students hands-on experience on the water while promoting safety and fostering a love for the sport.
For teenagers, the Academy works closely with secondary schools to offer marine training. This allows young people to develop practical skills, access casual work opportunities at the Club, and explore pathways to higher education and careers in the marine industry.
The Academy also includes plans to develop a youth mentoring program. By connecting participants with senior business leaders and even Olympic athletes, it aims to provide young people with guidance and support for their personal and professional growth.
"Sailing is a sport that can shape character," said Lou Pascuzzi, CEO and Managing Director of TLC Healthcare. "Our mission at TLC is to enhance the wellbeing of our communities, and this partnership is an exciting way to extend that commitment. We're helping to inspire and empower the next generation."
Sailing: a sport with endless benefits
The lessons learned on the water go far beyond sailing. Children and teenagers gain confidence, learn to work as a team, and develop resilience as they navigate challenges. These skills are transferable to all aspects of life, from school to career and beyond.
The Academy hopes to significantly increase participation and retention in sailing, inspire interest in marine skills, and support career development. It's not just about creating sailors — it's about creating opportunities.
A growing legacy
As SSCBC and TLC Healthcare look to the future, they are optimistic about the impact this partnership will have on local families. By making sailing accessible to all, they aim to leave a legacy of growth and opportunity for the Mornington Peninsula community.
