Beneteau 25s at Brighton Marina Yacht Club Easter Weekend

by Nick Gibbons 18 Apr 2001 08:59 BST

The Beneteau 25's joined the Sportsboat class over the weekend in Brighton. The racing was over three days and there were to be 10 races making them short and fast. On Friday the wind was light, around 10-12 knots, with a short Windward, Leeward course covering two laps. The First race was dominated by the Beneteau 25 of E1 Business/ Penguin Power (Geof Gibbons) who were never too far from the 1720 of SDM. E1 eventually managed to gain line honours to get the first gun of the weekend. The Second race was also won by E1 Business who were looking lightning quick in the light shifty conditions. The Saturday gave winds of around 15 - 25 and again very shifty only two races on this day and both suited to the heavier 1720 on the sportsboat course. Again E1 Business showed their experience of a strong breeze to stay upright and get a couple of solid results. On the Sunday again the wind was up around 18 knots for most of the day until the final of the fourth race where the wind died completely to around just 4 knots. Today the other Beneteau 25s closed the gap a couple of times on the E1 Boys to allow them to finish ahead. Team No Limit sailed by Gareth Edmondson won the last race in the easing breeze. The Regatta ended with Corked (1720 - Bob Fuller) taking 1st Place and E1 Business / Penguin Power 2nd who also took the Beneteau 25 Prize for the weekend.

The Beneteau 25s however stayed in Brighton on the Monday with the help of E1 Business and Brighton Yacht Club, to allow them to have a tuning and training day to brush up on speed, starts and manoeuvres. With the expert training from Jim Saltenstall MBE they were able to improve and look at all areas of their racing. The two boat tuning improving the boats speed. Short burst racing improving the manoeuvres and starts. The boats are gearing up for their campaigns for the European Championships.
