Laser Open Meeting at Wembley Sailing Club

by Joe Farwell 6 Jun 2001 11:03 BST

A warm sunny day with a shifty northerly breeze greeted 30 Laser sailors attending an Open Meeting on 3rd June, hosted by the Welsh Harp Sailing Association, a federation of Wembley SC, Seahorse SC and BTYC.

There were 20 home boats and 10 visitors from clubs as far way as Broxbourne, Banbury, Great Moor and Emberton Park. This event was part of the Home Counties Regions and Eastern Region Traveller Series.

In race 1 Graham Lund of Broxbourne SC, last year's winner, continued his fine form from last year to win from Marcus Bird of Wembley and Steven Janering of Seahorse. In race 2 Julian Bradley made a great start to lead from start to finish. There was a lot of place changing further back, especially when a squall with a 45 degree wind shift hit the fleet on the first run, causing some boats to capsize and some to fly through the fleet. Marcus Bird finished second and Graham Lund third.

Things settled down a bit for the final race. Bradley again made a good start and went on to win with Niall Martin of Wembley second and Marcus Bird third. After racing the fleet enjoyed a splendid tea.
