ISORA Series Race 2 at Dun Laoghaire

by Debbie Cummaford 7 Jun 2001 16:20 BST

The second race in the ISORA series took place on Saturday 2nd June and was to be a test of endurance and seamanship for boats and crews as well as a race.

The course was approximately 50 miles, from Dun Laoghaire to South Burford, down to Codling on the south side of the Banks, then up to Kish and on to the finish in Dun Laoghaire harbour.

The fleet left Dun Laoghaire a 8.30am in strong northerly winds, gusting around 40 knots. It was a fast reach down to Codling, but although some spinnakers were hoisted, it quickly became clear that a white sail reach was the preferred option!

Having rounded Codling, the boats and crews faced a tough and wet beat back up to Kish against wind and tide. Most opted to go inside the Banks to get out of the tide, but still had to endure very rough and confused seas.

Line honours and first place on handicap went to Roger Dobson in his Sigma 400 ‘Sigmagic’, who finished the race in 8 ½ hours. Second to finish was ‘Trinculo’, the other Sigma 400 owned by Michael Fleming, but he was beaten into 3rd place on handicap by Kieran Jameson and Aidan McManus in their Sigma 38 ‘Changeling’.

The next race in the Series will be the RORC race from Liverpool to Pwllheli on Sunday 8th July, which will also be a feeder face for ISORA week, to be held this year in Pwllheli from 11th to 14th July.
