Devon Yawl National Championships at Yealm Yacht Club

by Simon Cronk 3 Jul 2001 09:01 BST

30th June & 1st July 2001
Newton Ferrers, Devon

The 5th Devon Yawl national championships were hosted by Yealm Yacht Club. 43 yawls enjoyed superb racing over olympic style courses in Wembury Bay. The first race on Saturday, sailed in perfect conditions – bright sunshine & a force 3-4 -- was won convincingly by Ed Williams – Hawkes (Topsham SC), who led the fleet from start to finish, whilst local sailor Tim Petit finished second, having worked his way through the fleet.

With the wind freshening the second & third races were dominated by the heavy weather specialists and won by Andrew Hattersley (Topsham SC) with second places going to Mike Roberts ( Topsham SC ) and Clive Jacobs (Topsham SC) respectively

Race 4, sailed on Sunday morning in light airs, during which there was a 20 degree wind shift that significantly disadvantaged those who had chosen to take the southerly tack up the first beat, was won by Shane Buckley who took the lead from Chris Westwood (Yealm YC), who had led for most of the race.

The final race was won by Tim Petit, (Yealm YC) who dominated the race from start to finish in the continuing light & fickle breeze.

As ever, consistent results paid handsomely and the championship was not decided until the final race.
