Pursuit Race at Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club

by Edward Richards 17 Jul 2001 20:13 BST

The Hooper & Wollen Silver Tiller Pursuit Race

The second running of the Hooper and Wollen pursuit race at the end of the Babbacombe Regatta led to a record number of entries from as far a field as Queen Mary, Llangorse, Wimbleball and Falmouth with the Tasar fleet being particularly well represented, no doubt keen for some last minute practise before the forthcoming Worlds. The light winds caused some headaches for the race team, but the slowest boats got underway in a light northerly, as the race progressed the shifts were interesting, up to 180 degrees at times, so no need for the compass. The light winds seemed to favour the slower boats with last years winner, a Sprog sailed by Stuart Moon ( is this the last example still sailing) looking like favourites. In the end a Merlin Rocket of David Lee managed to get out in front and hold off with the fast approaching RS 400 of Garry Pharce who came in second. A slick move by the Proctors in a Laser 2000 at the final mark had them on the inside gaining water from 2 of the visiting Tasars. All agreed that despite taxing light conditions the tight bunching towards made for some exciting racing towards the latter stages with many boats in the hunt for a top 5 finish. It is expected that the Hooper and Wollen event which is attracted large numbers will become a firm event in the Southwest sailing Calendar.
