Scorpion Open Meeting at Sidmouth Sailing Club

by Alex Gray 17 Sep 2001 10:14 BST

This weekend Sidmouth Sailing Club hosted its first Scorpion open in a number of years. 8 visitors joined our fleet of 6 boats, enjoyed a hard weekends sailing. The North-westerly breeze creating calmer seas. However the breeze, a shifty force 3 to 4 gusting to force 6 at times. This proved too much for some and 7 boats retired by the end of race 2. Following the afternoons racing sailors sat down to an excellent 2 course meal together with an evenings entertainment which went into the early hours of Sunday morning. On Sunday the wind ,little kinder remained at force 3 to 4. The clear winners were John Mursell and Nick Keast who made the windward mark first in each race, the other places were wrestled for, Peter Rose and son John, Harry Harper and Liz Mower, Pete Smith and Pru Grant, Andy Hayman and Daughter Fran and Ian Harrison and Mike Hannan, close together making an exciting and hard fought race. In the end Peter and John Rose came second with Peter Harper and Liz Mower third. A special mention for juniors Steve Hacket and David Johnson coming 7th overall, sailing Scorpions only since July, completeing all races.
