Primo Cup 2002 at the Yacht Club de Monaco Weekend 2 Preview

by Isabelle Andrieux 8 Feb 2002 07:51 GMT

While the first weekend of the Primo Cup saw the victories of the Spanish Javier Aguado in the Stars and the Italian Eduardo Pavesio in the Bénéteau 25s; the Melges 24 enter into the battle this Friday 8th of February at 1pm for three days of competition in the Monegasque waters.

These modern one-designs join the fleet of 7 other classes still in competition (Mumm 30s, Smeralda 888s, Surprises, UFO 22s, Etchells, J/22s and J/24s,) from Saturday the 9th of February.

In this class, there is a very high standard of 24 competitors who will be reunited in Monaco, including notably Blu Moon of Franco Rossini who has just won the World Melges 24 Championship during Key West Race Week.

Also registered are the transoceanic sailor Lionel Péan (Fra) who will be joining forces with Gérard Vachet (Fra), Jacques Di Russo (Fra) a major specialist in Match-racing and also Mario Ziliani (Ita) and his crew Ale Ali "Ala".

The Melges 24 Class has a number of followers in the Principality with the creation of a flotilla of five boats, of which the leader is Chalopa, skippered by Benjamin Cohen. At his side, the young competitors trained at the Sailing School who, for their first regatta on this one-design, were placed in the top twenty in the European Championship and 3rd in the Hyères Championship in November.
