Mirror World Championships in Tasmania Overall

The final two races, 9 & 10, were sailed on the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania today. Conditions were perfect – 15 knots south-easterly sea breezes and sunshine.

The Irish team headed into the final day’s racing placed with Chris Clayton / Craig Martin, Andrew Woodward / James Bendon and Bobby Collins / Fintan Hughes placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the leaderboard. However, the points difference was tiny with the talented Australians, Glenn and Lloyd Collings recovering from their earlier disqualifications to challenge strongly from 4th place overnight.

In a superb display of tactical racing, the Irish squad scored 1st (Woodward / Bendon), 2nd (Clayton / Martin) and 3rd (Collins / Hughes) in race 9. Clayton and Martin had clearly increased their grip on the trophy but it was not theirs yet. Woodward and Bendon had moved to within three points of them and the Cork pairing went all out in the final race to win.

At the first mark in Race 10, Woodward / Bendon led the race from Collings. However, Chris Clayton has kept his nerve and just made it around the first mark in 3rd place. This was enough to give him the championship if he held on. The Irish army of supporters followed their every move for the following 90 minutes. Collings challenged Woodward / Bendon strongly on the 3rd windward leg, closing to within four boatlengths of them. However, the Cork team held on to score their 3rd race win of the series. Clayton / Martin, displaying great confidence and skill, separated from the fleet on the 2nd windward leg. They seized a favourable windshift and trebled their lead over the 4th placed boat in the race. They eventually crossed the line in 3rd place to huge cheers, foghorns and tumultuous applause from the raft of spectators and coach boats to win the championship by a single point from Woodward / Bendon.

Collings finished 3rd overall four points back with Collins and Hughes 4th a single point behind them.

Ireland thus retains the World Championship for the second time following victory in Ireland in 2000 and South Africa in 1999. The next World Championship will be held in Sweden on 2005.
