Flying Fifteen Worlds at Puerto Pollença, Mallorca - Overall

by Keith Jamieson 15 Jun 2007 21:18 BST 10-16 June 2007

This was going to be the final race day of the championships with two races planned to allow for a lay day, all be it on the last day of the championships. The day dawned providing an increasing north westerly gradient breeze; hopefully giving a true taste of what winds were on offer in Mallorca to the Championship sailor, certainly an improvement on the fickle winds earlier in the week. At the start of today’s racing it was still to close to call with five teams still in contention for the top slot, however could Hart and Hall over come the challenge from the late charge of Goacher and Evans.

Race 6 – In a good force 3 – 4 the over eager fleet got away at the third time of asking under a black flag; Alan Bax & Paul Busby (GBR, HISC) came off the line in a good lift closely followed by title contenders Goacher/Evans RWYC, at one point it looked like the right hand side would pay but this was a red herring and Bax/Busby in their 6 month old boat played the shifts up the middle of the course to round the windward mark first with Goacher/Evans in hot pursuit. Bax and Busby held on to their lead into the final beat until Goacher/Evans sailing a slightly more leeward course sailing in a lift picked up more pressure slipping around to take the lead; unfortunately Bax and Busby’s best result was to count for naught having fallen foul of the black flag at the start. With this race seeing the defending champions the Jerwood’s, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (AUS) finish in 17th; Aaron Goodmanson, Charterns Bay Yacht Club (NZL) finishing 9th and Darren Martin; Strangford Lough Yacht Club (IRL) finishing 6th . It was all going down to the last race between the only two teams in the frame for the title; Goacher/Evans and Hart/Hall with the latter one point to the good.

Race – 7 Would the sail maker boat builder pairing of Goacher/Evans over come the consistency of the coaches Hart & Hall? The starting sequence begun a game of cat and mouse ensued which saw Goacher and Evans position themselves, shielded from Hart & Hall to get a clear start to try and overcome the pairing from North Wales. The fleet getting way cleanly the leaders came of the middle right of the line to round the first windward mark Wells/Darling, HISC (GBR), Davy/Rigg, HISC (GBR) and Anderson/McAulay RFBYC (AUS). Wells/Darling maintained their lead well into the race; though Sheehy/Green (IRL) powered through into second in the next beat and Aaron Goodmanson (NZL) closed on the leaders and eventually pushed Wells/Darling into second place to cover Davy/Rigg 3rd and Anderson/McAulay into 4th; however with Anderson/McAulay picking up a black flag this let the Jerwood’s pick up 4th place with Sheehy/Green in 5th.

In the main event the cat and mouse antics carried on well round the course, with Hart & Hall breaking clear and covering Goacher & Evans loosely through out the race to finish eventually in 6th with Goacher/Evans in 8th. This finishing order giving Mike Hart and Tim Hall a three point final lead over Goacher/Evans to take the championship win; at the prize giving when asked how it felt Tim replied “Top Banana!” a Mike with a little more thought in broad Cumbrian “T’ We’re Greet!”. Discussing the championships both Mike and Tim felt the pressure right from winning the first race as neither had ever lead a championship from day one. However when it came to the final day both derived strength from the knowledge that with good boat speed, a good feel for the race area, and sense of the changeable conditions that the Bay of Pollensa could throw at them they could over come the opposition. After trying for the title since 1992 and having been second in Dublin in 2003 the lucky number 7 came in at last, an impressive feat to overcome the challenge of a fiercely competitive fleet our worthy 2007 World Champions, Mike Hart and Tim Hall GBR 3817 “Gekko Blaster “Port Dinorwic Sailing Club.

The fleet would like to thank the organising committee of Reial Club Nautic Port De Pollensa and the Spanish Flying Fifteen Association, but especially Joyce and David Thewlis, John Leave (Class Captain RCNPP), Tim Asher (President FF ESP); Michael Clough (FFI Council Member ESP) and especially Fernando Velarde the event director. The Flying Fifteen Association of Australia would like to extend an invitation to all fifteen sailors to compete for the 17th World championships in Melbourne see www.ffiworlds2009.com for details. However if you are looking for an event closer to home try see the www.flying15.org.uk for details of the remaining events in the UK this year.
