X-35s at the North Sea Regatta

by Robert Grieg-Gran 15 May 2008 14:46 BST

Turnstone TEN wins North Sea Regatta

18 X-35s, four of which were from the UK, joined almost 400 boats at the North Sea Regatta last weekend to compete in 4 days of racing off the Scheveningen coast in Holland. Light winds and blue skies held throughout the regatta and it was GBR Cool Runnings that got off to a perfect start with two bullets on the first day. However, with no discards allowed in the nine race series all the teams knew it was consistency would win this regatta.

On Saturday morning, the fleet waited until 2pm as the fight between the easterly gradient and the sea breeze caused 90-degree shifts across the course. After another 2 races, Quantum Racing Holland and the Turnstone Estates sponsored TEN Racing Group established themselves at the front of the fleet.

Wonderful conditions on the third day saw TEN take the day prize again with Quantum Racing Holland and Cool Runnings hot on their heels. Noticeably another Quantum powered boat, Maas, was rapidly moving up the order in the light winds.

With all to play for on the final day (and the Cool Runnings team unfortunately having to return home) the Ten Racing Group scored two safe second places to take the championship without a result outside the top 5. The boat, largely crewed by members of the RYA Volvo Keelboat Squad, now turns its attention to the last couple of events in Holland until the fleet travels to the Med for the Copa del Rey and the World Championships in Italy in September.
