Over two hundred people crowded round Setley Pond on Boxing Day for the annual Junior Model Yacht Regatta. As in previous years boats came in all shapes and designs, from classic shop-bought monohulls to multihulls fabricated out of drinks bottles. There was a very similar number of entries in each Category to last year - 12 Mono-hulls and 21 Multi-hulls making it to the start line. Competitors and spectators alike were greeted with clear blue skies and a freshening easterly wind.
On the water the wind was gusty, making for tricky sailing at times particularly as the boats came further under the Southern shore. Young Flynn Luxton capsized his 48cm multihull “Typhoon” in the first race and was left hoping that his father racing in a 44ft yacht in the Sydney Hobart Race might fare a little better.
Five races were completed with one discard. The top two monohulls were “Planet” sailed by Esme Woodington, with three firsts, just pipping “Robyn 2” sailed by Connie Stock to the post to win the Setley Cup, with “Fortune from the Tip” sailed by Emelia Palmer taking third overall.
In the multihull class “Maxicat” sailed by Amy Clark with three wins won the Seahorse Trophy by 2 points from “AUS 4” sailed by Alana Bennett (this was a genuine bottle boat as her father had been forced to scour the Lymington bins on Christmas Day in order to find two decent hulls). “Max” sailed by Harry Hebbard made third position overall.
Once again many thanks to the main finishing team of Robin Markes and Ado Jardine and all volunteers, both on and off the water.
