Series Two Round up
After a number of twists and turns, the conclusion of the RCYC Second Series saw Rainbow come out on top by the slenderest of margins. Going into the final race Rebel led the series with two firsts and a second, Rainbow was counting two firsts and a third and Kelpie was counting two seconds and a third. All of which meant that Rebel needed to keep Rainbow behind them and vice versa. Thus the scene was set for a true battle on the water in the last race. At the start Class Captain Jeremy Dunn sailing OD 26 Kelpie got away and led the race finishing first by nearly six minutes. Both Rainbow and Rebel had other things on their minds as second and third places were battled out. Rebel got the jump on Rainbow and covered her all the way up the first beat sticking to Rainbow like glue. A tight run followed and Rebel held 2nd at the leeward mark. Rainbow finally managed to break clear half way up the 2nd beat and then held on to take second and with both Rebel and Rainbow equal on points and count back, took the series by virtue of the better result in the last race. Who says OD sailing isn’t exciting?!
Second Series Results:
1st OD 23, Rainbow, D & T Ryeng, 7 points
2nd OD 42, Rebel, A & L Stevenson, 7 points
3rd OD 26, Kelpie, J Dunn, 8 points
RCYC Challenge Cup 3rd July
Rebel shades it!
Friday saw the running of the Challenge Cup races at RCYC. Three ODs turned out and the competition lived up to previous billing. After a shifty first beat Rainbow rounded the windward mark first with Rebel second and Kelpie third, with no more that 10 lengths between all three. A reach across the Roads followed by a long run to St Just saw Rainbow and Rebel pull away from Kelpie. Once round the leeward mark Rainbow and Rebel split tacks and when they finally crossed Rebel was just in front. The two boats traded tacks up the Trefusis shore and Rainbow finally managed to sneak ahead. Kelpie meanwhile had managed to reel some distance back and all was set for another battle up the harbour! With a shifty southerly coming down across Falmouth this was an interesting game of snakes and ladders. Rebel managed to come into the harbour just up to windward on the other two boats, and this was to prove decisive as a series of lifts helped Rebel to pull away from both Rainbow and Kelpie to win by about 10 lengths. Kelpie too managed to get on the right side of the shifts to take second with Rainbow a further 10 lengths back in third. There may only be three boats out at the moment but the racing is some of the tightest in the harbour with the smallest of margins making huge differences, perhaps the competition may encourage some of the other owners to get their boats out and come racing, or if you have had enough of handicap racing why not consider one of the three boats up for sale?
Challenge Cup Results:
1st OD 42, Rebel, A & L Stevenson
2nd OD 26, Kelpie, J Dunn
