7-15 August 2010
Saturday 14th August saw a brisk finish to the St Mawes OD series at Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week 2010. With winds of around 18 knots and gusting harder, five of the eight boats entered in the week turned out for the Flushing SC regatta which would effectively decide the minor placings; the series having already been wrapped up by Dave and Tam Ryeng sailing OD23 Rainbow. As if to underline their superiority Rainbow won again and took the week with a commendable 5 points total from what ended up a 6 race, one discard series.
The only other boat to put together a consistent series, Nick and Juliet Leach in OD36 Buccaneer, landed 2nd place with 12 points having been joined by their daughter Emma for some of the lighter days. Third place went to Richard Brown and Suzie Serviour in OD27 Spinaway although they were made to sweat on the final day as gear failure prevented them competing.
In the final analysis the only boat that could have pipped them, OD 26 Kelpie sailed by Jeremy and Rachel Dunn could only finish 5th leaving Spinaway to discard the DNC and count a slightly bizarre 4.5 due to a tie for fourth earlier in the week. Although only 8 boats entered, every one of the top 6 managed to get on the podium at least once and the closeness of the racing belied some of the final results.
This fleet is getting really competitive; and a good week of racing was had by all even though two days were lost due to some unseasonably strong winds. The fleet is now tuned up and preparing for the class championships in September, should be an interesting weekend!
Overall Results:
1st Rainbow (OD23) Dave and Tam Ryeng
2nd Buccaneer (OD36) Nick, Juliet and Emma Leach
3rd Spinaway (OD27) Richard Brown and Suzie Serviour
